Spanish cruise line, Pullmantur, has committed to use Cozumel as a Caribbean "homeport", starting from March 2010.

The news was announced by State Governor, Félix González Canto, earlier this week, from Spain.

The governor of Quintana Roo said he had confirmed arrangements with Pullmantur officials while in Madrid, Spain, for an international tourism industry event.

Making Cozumel a "homeport" means Pullmantur's cruises will start and finish at the island.

Passengers will be flown directly in and out of Cozumel from Europe.

Could generate over 100 direct jobs.

González said the move could generate more than 100 direct jobs on the island as well as indirect job creation in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Costa Maya.

He said that hotels would also benefit since many of Pullmantur's passengers will need to spend a night in Cozumel before their cruise.

Passengers will embark on their "Mayan Coast" cruises in Cozumel on Saturdays at 9pm.

They will then head off to visit Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, the Costa Maya and Progreso, before returning to Cozumel.
