Cozumel will see its first stand-up paddle (SUP) expo and race, at the end of this month, with around 60 paddlers expected to take part.

The event, being organized by Cozumel watersport school and equipment company, De Lille Sports, will take place on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30, 2016.

In an exclusive interview with This is Cozumel, event promoter and two time World Champion windsurfer, Raul De Lille, said the objective is to introduce lots of new people to the sport and "put Cozumel firmly on the stand-up paddle map".

The expo and race registration will take place on the Friday followed by race heats and the finals on the Saturday. Each competitor will receive a commemorative shirt, lunch and a chance to win prizes worth thousands of pesos.

The first place winners of the Individual Men's and Women's categories will take home complete inflatable board packages. There will also be a variety of prizes for 1st–3rd places in the individual categories and for the winning SUP team.

The race day will start at 9am with a DJ playing throughout and live music to close the event after the prize ceremonies. All equipment is provided by De Lille Sports and included with the registration fee, giving every paddler a fair opportunity to win at a reasonable price.
